How many times throughout your career have you been dangled a carrot at work? A promise of a bonus, a promotion, more responsibility and the like, how effective was it? For a short-while it might have worked, but longer term, how did that work out? The carrot and stick approach was designed with donkeys in mind, to get the most out of the donkey. I am going to take a wild guess and say that you didn’t hire your staff based on the fact that they were stubborn mules? Your staff don’t work for carrots and lets face it, we are presented with more and more constraints on pay increases and promotions all becoming harder to achieve, the fact is, we are running out of carrots.
