Fear, that wretched feeling when you are about to do something that scares the living day lights out of you. Years ago, I would have let fear get in between me and my goals and stop me achieving what I really wanted out of life.
Now, I don’t let it.
It’s not because I don’t feel fear, of course I do, I just don’t let it stop me.
Fear isn’t a bad thing.
Indeed, in some cases it’s a lifesaving emotion. Imagine if you didn’t feel scared when crossing the road. You just ran out, into the path of oncoming traffic. The fear of getting hit by a car literally saves your life. It makes you take the right course of action.
The problem occurs, when this emotion stops you doing things that would actually grow you as a person and change your life.
Ask yourself, what is fear preventing you from doing right now?
- Maybe you would love to change careers, but that just feels way too scary.
- You have always dreamed of starting up your own business, but fear keeps you stuck in your 9-5.
- Perhaps you are single and would love to have the confidence to ask someone out, but the fear of rejection prevents you and you remain single.
Think about all the opportunities you have turned down because you were scared? All of those dreams and ambitions thrown away because fear robbed you of even daring to think they were possible.
Had you not been scared,
what would you have achieved? Where would you be now?
So how exactly do you move ahead when you are scared to death?
Take one step
The first step is just to get started, procrastination shows up when you are scared and keeps you stuck in your situation. So as hard as it feels, you need to take one action, one little step. Do the thing you are most scared about.
Perhaps you are starting a business, but have been spending way too long on “important research” you keep messing around with your website. Trying a new font, colours and the like. When what you really need to be doing is launching your business and speaking to your customers – but the latter task feels way too scary.
Fear isn’t going away
So, here’s the truth – fear isn’t going anywhere. It will always be there. Yup, I know, sucks right? We need to accept that fact and get on with it. Everyone gets scared, even the people you admire the most. Break down the task into little steps and start taking action.
Here’s a revelation, fear is really excitement
Yes, really! Fear uses the same processes in your body as excitement, they are so closely linked. Next time you have a job interview, a first date or a presentation, remember those feelings that you feel are just excitement. You can literally tricky your mind into thinking it’s excited.
Start trusting your intuition rather than the fear.
What decisions have you made in the past, although you felt really scared at the time, turned out to the best decisions you have ever made?
Learn to start trusting instinct instead of fear; because it is really easy to focus on decisions that went wrong, that’s how our brains are programmed.
let’s say you plan on asking someone out on a date.
Fear tells you not to do it, it’s scary and they will say no. Instinct on the other hand tells you that they have showed some interest and if they don’t want to go on a date, it’s no big deal. Rather than let fear rule, i.e. you don’t ask them out. Trust that your instincts are right and that they will be delighted to accept your offer of a date.
Fears are simply thoughts and you really aren’t your thoughts.
